Solar-powered hot air balloon makes debut flight in Bristol

The solar-powered balloon has a back-up conventional propane burner, but the idea is that the heat of the sun warms the air inside. It has been designed so that half of the balloon is made of black material in order to absorb the maximum amount of heat. The other half is silver and is insulated to keep heat in. Instead of turning the flame on and off to make the balloon rise and descend it will have to be controlled by opening and closing vents to make the balloon turn in and out of the sunshine.

Fresh out the factory, the solar air balloon made its inaugural flight this morning. It's a tremendous feat of local engineering and a fine example of the power of solar!
